Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of my genius hour project was to clean up the sports facilities after games. We also did this project to leave an example for future students.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
I went to some sports games at the beginning of the year. I saw after the games the teachers, booster club, and parents cleaning up after the students. I thought that was not right because we students were the ones who had made the mess. In the winter I attended some basketball games in the gym, and the same thing. Students left all their popcorn and other foods on the floor of the bleachers. The Janitors and parents stayed after to clean up. I wanted to do something about this issue.
During english one day we had a time called Genius hour, a project that benefited either the school or community, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I got together with Lily and we came up with the Clean-Up Committee. We had to get approval for our idea so we went to the athletic director, Mr. Unger, for approval. He was very happy with the idea and thought it was a great one. We went to Mrs. Rankin for some extra help hoping the key club could pitch in. That part of the plan did not go as we had hoped.
With some minor setbacks we were still ready to do this project. We came up with a sign-up sheet to post in the office, hoping for volunteers. We never ended up getting to post that sheet and we became too busy to do the basketball games. We had lots of other commitments that we had to take care of. A few weeks ago we knew the end of our project was coming so we talked to Mr. Unger and decided to clean up after some track meets, even though track was almost over. We cleaned up after the middle school track meet on monday may 15th.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
The people who could benefit from our projects are the students and the staff. The students could learn from our example and learn to clean up after themselves after various sporting events. The adults would see that we appreciate all the hard work that they do for our school. They would see that we care about our facilities and are proud of our school.
We hope that this will start a chain reaction for other students to get involved in cleaning up after their events and others. We hope that when we graduate some other kids will willingly take over our project and continue it for years to come. We hope that we have become a great example for not just the students part of this project but anyone who sees these students doing this project.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If i could do my genius hour project differently, I would change a few things. I would have probably started this project a lot sooner, so I could clean up after more sporting events. I started so late in this project that we got less of a chance to do what I wanted to get done. I would have also been more prepared for cleaning up. After the track meet it was pouring rain and we should have planned better for the rain.
I thought we did not need to get more people and i am glad we did not because it was easier to get done with just the two of us. With more people it would have been harder to keep it organized and there was not much to clean up so there would have been people doing nothing. I was glad that the key club could not help in the end because of how late we started and there was not as much that needed to be done as we thought.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
What we did well on our Genius Hour process was our idea. Our idea for this genius hour project was one that would not only affect how the students and staff look at our facilities, but how other members of our community look at how our students treat our facilities. We worked hard to set a good example for future students who will have to do a genius hour project.
This project is something we hope to do all year and not just for our Genius Hour project. We are very proud of this project and what it has done for us. After we cleaned up after the track meet we had parents asking us why and what we were doing. After we explained our project they were very impressed about what we were doing and said that we were setting a great example for the current and future students of KHS.
